Swedish aid organizations

Are you thinking about supporting a Swedish aid organization? Perhaps you’re already supporting one or more organizations without really knowing if your money is being used according to its purpose?

Fundraising – laws and rules

When this post is published there are no actual laws in Sweden that state how public fundraising should be conducted. This means that individuals, companies and organizations are able to conduct fundraising without a permit as long as it is conducted on social media and not in a public place, since the latter may require a permit from the police.

Secure payment methods

Seeing that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of aid organizations it is important to support the ones that offer secure payment methods. A simple way to do that is to look for organizations that meet the requirements to hold a so called “90-konto” (90 account).

Swedish Fundraising Control Authority

Organizations with a 90 account are controlled and reviewed annually by the Swedish Fundraising Control Authority. This is a way for the authority to establish whether the money is used for the desired purpose or not.

Organizations that fail to meet the requirements may have their 90 account quality seal withdrawn by the Swedish Fundraising Control Authority. It’s also quite common that organizations close a 90 account on their own request.S

What to think about: Step-by-step

  • Check that the organization of your choice is has a website with up-to-date information.
  • Look for the latest annual report that should be available on the website.
  • Contact the organization and ask them to send more information.
  • If you’re feeling unsure; stop your donation.
